About ColdCalcs

ColdCalcs is built and run by one engineer, not a software company. It grew out of day-to-day pressure vessel and ammonia refrigeration sizing work, as a faster way to get a preliminary vessel or coil size on screen than reaching for a spreadsheet or a full design package for every early-stage question.

Background

ColdCalcs is built by an engineering manager at a pressure vessel and refrigeration fabricator, with a background in sizing ASME pressure vessels and ammonia liquid overfeed equipment for industrial refrigeration projects. That day-to-day work is what shaped which calculators ColdCalcs offers and what each one outputs — the same preliminary sizing questions that come up on real projects, made available as a free, browser-based tool.

ColdCalcs is a calculation tool for preliminary sizing, not an engineering-services firm. It does not review, approve, or certify any result, and it does not act as the engineer of record for any project. Every calculation is a starting point for a qualified engineer’s own review, not a finished answer.

What ColdCalcs is

ColdCalcs — free preliminary sizing calculators for industrial refrigeration: ASME VIII-1 vessel thickness, vessel sizing, thermosyphon receivers, and ammonia coil loads.

Full on-screen results are free for every calculator, with no account required. Paid plans add PDF export and saved calculations only — on-screen results are never metered or paywalled. See Pricing for what a paid plan changes.

Run it

See all four free preliminary sizing calculators: PRELIM, Vessel Sizer, HPR / Thermosyphon Sizer, and the Coil Suite.

FAQ

Who builds ColdCalcs?

One engineer, working as an engineering manager at a pressure vessel and refrigeration fabricator. ColdCalcs is not built or operated by a software company or an engineering-services firm.

Does ColdCalcs certify or seal results?

No. ColdCalcs is a calculation tool for preliminary sizing only. It does not review, approve, seal, or certify any result, and using it does not create any engineering-services relationship. Every result must be independently verified by a qualified engineer before use.

Is ColdCalcs affiliated with COMPRESS, PV Elite, or DesignCalcs?

No. ColdCalcs is an independent, free preliminary sizing tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a substitute for any full-code pressure vessel design package. See the pressure vessel software comparison for how they differ.

How can I contact ColdCalcs?

Email info@coldcalcs.com with questions, feedback, or corrections, including anything on this site that needs review.

Preliminary sizing for engineering evaluation only. Not for construction. All results must be independently verified by a qualified engineer against the applicable code edition.
